Creed: Service to Humanity

Service to Humanity

…and service to humanity is the best work of life! The concluding words of the Jaycee Creed, and my personal favorite. This line cuts to the core of what it means to be a Jaycee. A description of a life lived in the joy of service to others.

Recently, I was fortunate enough to attend a National Conference in Myrtle Beach; my first national conference, followed two short weeks later by the State Conference held in Gaylord, Michigan. The national conference was both overwhelming and incredible. Total honesty, seven months of a winter wreaked havoc on this sun-starved Michiganders desire to attend indoor award ceremonies and training’s. But as it turned out the view inside was equally awe-inspiring. The awards ceremony celebrated innovative projects that took place from all over the U.S. as well as the dedication and achievement of many dedicated chapters and individuals. The two main takeaways from this experience were:

1) inspiration for what can be achieved when dedicated individuals pulls together and….
2) JCI Michigan members rock!

Several individuals I know personally were recognized at the national level for their contributions. It was both exhilarating and motivating. I spend quality time at the beach too…I mean it’s gorgeous, but the time spent indoors was equally thrilling.

Two weeks later I found myself listening to Noelle Nachreiner speaking at the State Awards ceremony in Gaylord. The theme of the National President’s speech was the last line of the Jaycee Creed. She spoke of a deep desire to give back to the community and how much of her own life she is willing to give in this pursuit. As I listened to her speech, which so illuminated what is true in my own heart and life, I was reminded of one of my all time favorite quotes by Ralph Waldo Emerson. “It is one of the most beautiful compensations in life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself.” The process of participating and creating impactful projects and events as a member of JCI Kalamazoo has brought so many additional benefits. Knowing you are part of the reason that joy or comfort was given to anyone that is suffering or in need brings incredible joy in itself. Being a member of the Jaycees as brought about the cultivation of professional skills, the job I currently love, and the support of like minded individuals within this chapter and throughout the state as well. In giving of ourselves we are filled to overflowing and so I firmly believe that is why, …service to humanity is the best work of life.
